Weekend Recap

Friday

  • Kyle and I went to play at the mall (nothing he loves more), then stopped at the food court for some chick fila because he asked for chicken so politely.
  • Afternoon rain storm...I wish it rained daily.
  • Olympic kick off party at Kevin and Erin's- We had a great time! We played some Wii (I even claimed one gold medal), we had delicious treats, we got to see my cousin Kourtne from Chicago, Kyle had the time of his life staying up til' midnight, we got some great family time in. We love these people. (my camera also died after about 2 pictures...bummer)
Saturday
  • I slept in too much and went running when it was way too hot
  • We watched a lot of Olympics
  • We got some good news and headed to City Creek to celebrate...ended up at Cheesecake Factory (how did that happen?) where Kyle behaved wonderfully the entire time...which is a record.
  • We came home and watched "Mirror Mirror", which was just ok.
  • We made family friendship bracelets to prove we are bff's.

Sunday
  • More Olympics.
  • Church with hilarious sunbeams and wild Kyle.
  • Ryan made a delicious dinner of meatloaf, potatoes, and cobbed corn. My Dad joined us and brought the most delicious ice cream I have ever had. Yum.

  • More Olympics.

Meet me in the middle...

...and we'll agree to call it the compromise. Anyone else know that song? Anyways. You know in marriage it is nice to have individual interests...but it is also nice to enjoy things together too. Well, Ryan just sat through every single episode of The Bachelorette with me, and plays Candy Land every night...so I thought it was my turn.

There are few things Ryan loves more than playing tennis (second only to basketball I believe)...I can't play to save my life. But tonight we began the journey of teaching me. I am not saying tennis will ever be "my thing", but we had a really good time. Give me a few years and I might even be able to actually return a real serve of his!
I think this means Ryan has to go skiing with me this winter...

Dad

I am pretty lucky when it comes to work. Not only do I get to work from home, make my own schedule, and do something I really enjoy, but while I work I know Kyle is well taken care of. Last night was one of those nights. Ryan and Kyle hit the town to do a few of Kyle's favorite things. They brought home these pictures so I could see the fun they had.
The park and Summer Sno makes Kyle a happy boy.

19 Months

Quick update of my favorite things about Kyle currently

  • He is so, so chatty.
  • When you ask "what does Usher say?" He says oh baby, baby and starts to dance...Usher and the Beibs are his fave. Oops?
  • His favorite color is blue. Whenever he is coloring if you don't give him a blue he drops everything and starts looking for his "blue".
  • Speaking of which, he LOVES to draw. He will do it for hours. Circles are his favorite.
  • He "writes" his name...It is four circles but as he draws them he announced K...Y...L..E!
  • He thinks any song at church means it is over and says "all done, go home!" Even for the opening song.
  • He won't go to nursery alone.
  • The tantrums have begun...oh the tantrums.
  • He struggles with sharing...anything.
  • He will do just about anything for chocolate.
  • He prefers to have at least two sippy cups at all times.
  • He asks to go to bed every night. Stops everything and comes and asks for sleep.
  • He likes to count
  • He likes to scare people.
  • He asks for a new song in the car when he is bored with the one on
  • He likes to be called obi wan kanobi after bath time when he is in his hooded towel.
  • He likes when we have dance parties.
  • He LOVES dogs.
  • He only needs two more teeth to have a complete set.
  • He gives wonderful, slobber free kisses.
  • He is a bit of a daddy's boy...but he loves me too.
  • He is very attached to his blankie.
  • He loves bubbles, slides, and anything he can climb on.
  • He always says thank you when you give him something.
There is not a day I don't laugh myself to tears over something he does. I love having a little sidekick. He is my favorite.

Changing my mind

A little bit ago a good friend of mine wrote a thought provoking blog post. You can read it here. I really enjoyed reading it but kinda put it in the back of my mind. But then over time I found myself constantly thinking about the question posed at the end of the post. How do I find motivation and live in the now?

I realized a few things about myself as I thought over it. I too struggle with putting everything into the future. I think it is easy to do this when the future holds something you consider to be "better" than your current situation. But what about now?

I find in general, I must be motivated by a positive force. Take exercise for example. The way my mind works is: alarm goes off, I think no way, I press snooze, I tell myself I am a fatty and need to get to work, I go back to sleep anyways, I wake up two hours later feeling even more self loathing than before, and the day is a total negative failure before I even leave my bed. This is how things go when I don't focus and try.

Scenario two. The successful one I spend every day trying to train my mind to follow: alarm goes off, ugh but  I tell myself I can do this, I get up, I go run, I feel so much peace, I push my limits, I prove to myself I can do hard things, I go home, I shower, I start my day feeling empowered and proud.

My point is, insulting myself, threatening myself, and putting myself down gets me nowhere. I have to stay upbeat. I have to give myself pep talks. I have to change my mind every minute of every day to boost myself up. I have to do things because I want to, and that want has to come from a positive, productive place. When I slip up, sleep in, or don't get things done in the day, instead of beating myself up I just make a charge to do better the next day. That is how I respond productively. It has got to be positive or I get nowhere. So after figuring out how I get motivated in general I moved on to the NOW part.

I am excited for my future. I think that is a good thing. I believe your future should always hold things you look forward to, otherwise carrying on might be a bit challenging. But we all know there are pros and cons to any situation. That shiny future I am looking forward to will hold things I don't love. There are some things now, that are better than they will be in the future. Reminding myself of these things, is how I love the now. Embracing the things I know will not always stay this way makes me live for now.

The other major component to me living in the present is just taking things an hour, a day, and a week at a time. What am I doing TODAY. What am I doing right NOW. How can I make TODAY count. And I do this, by staying positive, which keeps me motivated.

All of these things don't come naturally to me, but every day I work a little towards changing my mind.

Heber

As I have mentioned before, Ryan's parents are on a mission at a girl's camp in Heber. We miss seeing them more regularly, but it is so fun to be able to visit them every now and then. Not to mention how beautiful it is up there. This weekend was awesome. I love these people. Kyle does too. We miss them already.
*sometimes I wear Ryan's hat and jump around like a freak...the things I doo to hear Kyle laugh. Also...hello  Moose.

Rain

Nothing like a rainy day to wash away the old, and get me ready for the new. Puddle jumping in jammies....that's how we roll.

4th of July

Hope you had a great holiday! We sure enjoyed ours. We saw a little family in the morning, set off the candy cannon, hit up a movie in the afternoon, then headed to the park for some pizza (ditched the bbq idea last minute) bubbles and fabulous family time. We loved doing our own thing our own way all day. Mission fun holiday totally accomplished.

Monday

Last night Kyle had some cousins sleep over. Party on a Monday? I love summer.
